Nice atmosphere, good prices, good, not great, food We had sushi and edamame appetizer; edamame was great, sushi was okay (fresh, just not always what we expected by the menu, and quite a large portion for the price). Really loved the atmosphere of the place. I would go again and get food other than the sushi. My husband doesn't want to go back because he still felt hungry after eating (not really their fault) Great Staff, really accommodated my wishy-washy ordering.

Sakura is easily one of the best restaurants in State College. The food is excellent, the staff is friendly, and there's actual atmosphere instead of florescent overhead lighting. Head over during lunch and grab one of their great Bento boxes. The portions and price can't be beat. We especially enjoy their teriyaki salmon and beef, though their sushi is also excellent. A few of my friends hate the dressing on the salads, but I've always been very happy with everything I've ordered here.

Best sushi in State College. Don't bother going anywhere else. It is even a great place for vegetarians with sushi loving friends. The tempura fried sweet potato rolls are amazing, and I love their avocado roll. Great actual sushi too. Beautiful presentation. And save room for dessert, their mochi is so good, especially the green tea flavor. The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts is that the service can be a little slow, but the food is worth the wait.

AMAZING!! This is one of our all time favorite restaurants in State College. The sushi is great and the teriyaki tofu melts in your mouth. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The steak and chicken hibachi was perfectly cooked and tasted like it could have been a lot more expensive. A must on any Penn State visit!

Great sushi especially for State College, plus it's BYOB! Location and place itself is nothing special (great bathrooms though) but there really aren't many sushi options in State College so glad this place opened up. If you're in the mood for sushi in State College this is the place to start!

Actually, pretty good for middle of nowhere Pennsyltuckey. We had a special Snow White roll with asparagus tempura and white tuna. Very good. The salad dressing was slightly sweet ginger. Good. The tempura was light but not great. The decor was just okay. Kind of Asian Denny's with the lights turned down.

After visiting twice, we've had the same experience. The food is good, I have to say the sushi is my favorite in State College! The fish is fresh, and they have some inventive rolls. I really enjoyed the rolls I've ordered off the specials like the 2011 roll. The crunchy spicy tuna roll however was very disappointing as there was nothing crunchy about it! I've only had the sushi so far, but hope to try some of the rest of their large menu. However the service does not match the food. It's been very slow both times, despite the restaurant being at best half full. The most recent time all the appetizers came after the main dishes, and we tried to cancel them given the long wait time, and were told we could not. We were in a group of five, and our dishes came out all at varying times, one person didn't get their dish until the rest of us had finished eating. I've been to many sushi restaurants and it's not that hard to stagger the food to come out a little closer together. The wait staffs attitude towards the situation didn't help. I'll probably go back to this restaurant, but until the service improves it's going to be near the bottom of my list!

My wife and I went to Sakura for lunch today and had their 3-roll lunch special. I found the food to be on par with what we usually get at Fuji, but I was really pleased with the atmosphere and service. The entire staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and the restaurant itself is cozy, nicely decorated, and condusive to quiet, private conversations at your table. I'm looking forward to going back for dinner sometime soon!

I love this place. The sushi is some of the best I've ever had. Rivals sushi in San Francisco and in Washington DC. I have never been disappointed with the food quality. Serivce is excellent. Atmosphere is very delightful. Special sushi rolls are my favorite here. Can't recommend it highly enough. My new favorite restaurant.

I went here for lunch with some friends. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was very good, and they have lots of vegetarian dishes. They have a nice decor, with a quiet atmosphere (unlike some of the other local Asian restaurants, which can be a little noisy). I'm looking forward to going back.

Loved it! The decor is nice. The waitstaff is pleasant and prompt. The food looks and tastes fabulous. There a great selection of food, ranging from hibachi items, soups, appetizers, Asian entrees (General Tso's and such) and sushi. Try the mochi ice cream for dessert!

I came here because I needed a quick lunch and it was across the street from my hotel. The building looks odd and the parking lot was completely empty, but I went it because the reviews on here were so positive. I ordered the teriyaki shrimp bento box. The salad was a small bowl of wilted greens drenched in a flavorless dressing. When the bento box came out it did not look very appetizing. The shrimp was drowned in sticky, sweet teriyaki sauce, the rice was dry and the sushi was ok, but nothing special. I don't know why this place receives such high praise. It was merely edible.

Quite yummy, perfect lunch special portions, fast service, accommodating for our kid. We had a shrimp teriyaki bento box (yum!!), the 2-roll special with spicy tuna and California, and two orders of Gyoza for the kid, who gobbled them all right up. I just ordered the dumplins, delicious, not greasy, nice crunch, i liked the presentation of the plate. The waitress was very nice. Yellow tale jalapeño was tasty, good texture, the spicy was just in the right point. The titanic roll and tiger roll totally recommended. My son ordered the classic California and Philadelphia, both were delicious. Prices are to high compare to other asian restaurants in the town.

This little gem was an unexpected delight for the tummy. The service was a bit "blah" and not really worth commentary positive or negative - but the food was a treat, Went here for Lunch, and took advantage of the "three roll special" as well as throwing in an additional "specialty roll" that totally exploded in my mouth! Quick, pretty and very, very fresh - certainly not what I expected when away from any major bodies of water. This is well worth a stop over if you're looking to enjoy a bit of a roll feast.

I had high hopes for Sakura after reading all the positive reviews, so came in for the lunch special. What was so special about it? Well, I'm sure it was special for the restaurant, because they made a lot of money off of food that just wasn't worth the price tag. The food definitely wasn't special. It was just..... meh. Not actively bad, but not good. No flair, no flavor, pretty bland overall. I've had better, even in State College. We got 3 sushi rolls, miso soup and a seaweed salad. Best part was the sweet potato roll. Worst part was the miso soup, since it was obviously made with fish and gave my date a stomachache. (Or was it the seaweed salad that cost $5 and tasted really "off," like it had been sitting around for a few days?) Other points: -The atmosphere inside is kinda dark and dingy. -The server wasn't all that friendly or helpful, and didn't even check in with us during the meal to see how it all was. -They're BYOB, which means they don't serve alcohol. They should really get a liquor license. If they could have served us some sake, we probably wouldn't have noticed just how "meh" the food really was.

Don't let the abandoned Shoney's look on the outside fool you, Sakura is Tier 1 on the inside. I think this is my new favorite sushi in State College, and the fact that it's 2 seconds from my house only ups the ante. The only downside is the waitstaff seems a little confused if the orders get a little crazy, and it's expensive. But who cares? They'll bring you an entire barbecue squid.

This place has been here for a few years which is surprising given the quality of the food when I went. In the middle of PA you dont expect to find the best sushi but some standards like cleanliness, skills in cuts of meat and rolling, and freshness of meat are important. I ordered a roll with salmon and there were scales EVERYWHERE. It was disgusting and ruined my meal. Scales are pretty easy to see and part of the prep process so if they are missing that... what else are they missing? bacteria? gross. The rolls were also not assembled well and kept falling apart. I didnt get sick but I never went back.

This place came recommended to me by the hotel front desk across the street. Before I went, I looked at the reviews and got my appetite up for some sushi. Boy, was I disappointed. I had the Sushi Dinner, which sounded like a combo plate. It was a combo plate, but of only of 5 different kinds of fish (it was 9 pieces). The pieces of fish were so big that each were a big, chewy mouthful, with very little rice beneath. The roll that came with the meal, was a tuna roll. The seaweed wrap was stale and chewy, and the flavor was not fresh. The soup and salad were just so so. I only ate half of what I ordered, except for the edamame, and decided to bail. I wouldn't recommend this place, nor will I go back.

It's good sushi (for State College). Good but nothing spectacular. Definitely better than supermarket sushi. The 3 roll lunch for 11 bucks and change is a pretty decent deal. Not a fan of the nonchalant staff. I understand this is not fine dining, but friendlier service would be nice. Tip: Lunch specials run Mon-Sat from 11am to 3pm.

When I first sat down I was worried. This place has all the signs of plummeting standards as the menus were many years old. The owners may not be Japanese but plenty of places in NYC are like that too. I was pleasantly surprised that the tempura batter was light and crisp. Maybe a little greasy but well done. My eel roll was flavorful and light. The rice was cooked well and not pasty or heavy which is good. Three stars in a big city but four stars for the middle of PA.

I've only had the lunch special sushi but it was the best I've had in SC ( i know thats not saying much). It was a little bit more expensive than most the other places in town but def worth it. Clean. Only downside is that it is not within walking distance from downtown or else I would have gone much more.

I have to change my review to 4 stars now because my most recent trip to Sakura was disappointing. We ordered take out this time and I was not only not given everything I ordered (which, of course, I found out when I got home) but I was also accused by an employee over the phone of falsifying the fact that I didn't get the extra order of rice, and the dessert that we ordered. After finally conceding that they did in fact forget the rice, they then went on to tell me they "forgot to tell" me that they didn't have the dessert in stock at the moment. :( I hope this never happens again and I hope I can change this back to a 5 in the next few months. I really like this place but the last experience really was disturbing!

This place has very good service and good sushi as well, very convenient location on S Atherton with a good amount of parking. I like their lunch specials as well, the bento boxes and the sushi are pretty good deals for lunch. Something that stands out is their desserts because I wouldn't normally expect to find tiramisu, creme brûlée and some other delicious desserts at a Japanese restaurant.

The lunch at Sakura is very well done. My wife had the Bento box with salmon teriyaki, Shumai, California role (which she swapped out for a cucumber and avocado role) and brown rice. I had the sushi and sashimi lunch special, a picture of which I submitted here. Although the salad dressing on the side salad was too watery and tasted more like thousand island than ginger, that was the only real complaint we had about an otherwise excellent lunch. The food is fresh and full of flavor. The Bento box is reasonably priced at $8.95 for lunch and they had a nice selection of lunch specials. Service was very good and the interior design was elegant and comfortable. It easily accessible from Atherton and has a parking lot as well.

I've been lucky to have a lot of great sushi in Washington, DC (a sushi haven) and Sakura in State College is comparable to some of the best I've had there! I've had sushi at Sakura twice and, both times, if was excellent: fresh and beautifully presented. The menu is extensive and the rolls include some of the staples (e.g. California roll) as well as some creative offerings (with fresh mango, asparagus, and interesting sauces). The "regular" Asian menu is also very good: I've had the mango chicken and the ginger chicken stir-fries -- both excellent. The specialty (more complex) sushi rolls are a bit pricey, especially for State College ($12-$14). But they are big and sushi-grade fish of this quality is expensive. This restaurant is a great addition to the State College area culinary offerings!

I need to preface this review by complaining that I thought this was a buffet, and it isn't. Why would I think this is a buffet? Why, because it says on their website ( pasakura.com ) that they "feature authentic Chinese & Japanese Buffet Restaurant." Yeah, sounded like it was a buffet restaurant to me, but I was mistaken. Anyway, I guess that was just a misunderstanding (or false advertising), so on to the food. After I got over the initial surprise that this wasn't a buffet, I ordered the Spicy Roll Combo and the Tropical Roll. Both were good enough, but nothing spectacular. I have had sushi at Chen's Mongolian, Fuji and Jade, Ni Hao, College Buffet (does that even count?), Penang, and Maki Yaki, and I have to say that Sakura isn't any different than the others (except College Buffet, but that's for a different review). It's just your run of the mill Asian and Sushi. For the price, you're better off to go Ni Hao, which is all you can eat and has the same variety. If you want all you can eat hibachi and sushi that tastes just as good as Sakura, go down the street to Chen's Mongolian, where the food is fresh, the service is great, and the prices are cheap. My mom ordered the General Tso's Chicken with Fried Rice ($1.00 extra btw.). I found it bland and greasy, but she liked it, and that's all that matters right? To finish our meal, we had desserts. She had the Tiramisu cup and I had the Creme Brûlée. While you could tell they both were pre-made and fresh from the refrigerator (maybe even freezer), they were delicious, easily the best part of the meal. All in all the food, service, and atmosphere were ok, but maybe not good enough to spend almost $70 for two people.

I used to go to Fuji Garden to satisfy my sushi cravings, but the abysmal service and silly set-up finally took their toll. I had heard good things about Sakura (I'd only been once before and was underwhelmed), so when the mood for raw fish struck on a recent chilly evening, I decided to give them another go. We ordered a bunch of things, as we were hungry: - the special appetizer du jour = salmon tartare w/ponzu (excellent & decent portion) - the blackened tuna, which I found rather meh -- but then I only ever order fatty tuna, because the taste of regular raw tuna is about as exciting as licking a window pane; overall the dish was a overwhelmed by a wasabi-mayo drizzle - toro sashimi = MP $7.95 for 3 tiny shreds of fatty tuna. tasty but a bit skimpy, and sliced/butchered in such a way that would make any sushi itamae want to commit harakiri - fatty yellowtail sashimi = very good, different cut & a bigger portion than the toro - fatty salmon sashimi = probably the largest sashimi portion overall, which makes me think that the more expensive the fish, the tinier the slice. not a good policy, and also rather unorthodox. Why not slice all the fish the same and charge more instead? - crispy spicy scallop roll = very nice. crispy, crunchy, with a nice sauce and fresh scallop inside. probably the winner of the night along with the salmon tartare - crispy yellowtail roll = also very nice, although the tempura in this roll was a bit more muted -- not as crispy, which first made me assume they had brought the wrong roll. Overall, I'd say this is a good place if you're craving some raw fish. The quality and freshness of the fish is very good, the service is VERY friendly and attentive (we had no communication issues with anyone, unlike the previous reviewer), and it's BYOB. I like.

Living in State College for four years have definitely lowered my standards a bit, which is probably why I have given two restaurants in State College five stars! For good sushi, Sakura is the place to go in State College! It hands down beats Fuji and Jade, although Penang has pretty good sushi as well, but the last time I checked was a year ago.

I'm taking Sakura down from 4 stars to 3 stars, sadly... So this place was never amazing orgasmic sushi or anything, but for State College, it was pretty awesome. I'd still say it's awesome, in some aspects. I've been here at least ten times now, and the fish is usually very fresh. This is the only place in State College where I will order sashimi, as it is the most consistent in the quality of fish. Where it's not consistent is the preparation of the dishes. For example, the sashimi appetizer is supposed to come with 8 pieces of fish, and several times I have gotten only 6 or 7 pieces. This is correctable if you are aware of what the menu says you should be getting, but what's not correctable is that they slice the fish inconsistently as well. When my sashimi platter has 4 big slices of tuna, 2 medium slices of whitefish, and 2 tiny slices of salmon (my favorite), I feel a little bit ripped off. The maki is good, the rice is prepared correctly and they have a lot of fun combinations on the menu. But again, watch your plate--I have gotten the wrong order a couple times here recently. On my last visit, I ordered a Pink Lady roll (eel, shrimp tempura, & spicy tuna). It came without the spicy tuna. And considering that this roll is $4 more than the roll with just eel and shrimp tempura...ummm...yeah, the spicy tuna is kind of important. And it may seem superficial, but the food presentation is not as nice lately either. Did they get a new chef or something? I still stand by my declaration that this is the best place to go for sushi in State College, but the gap between Sakura and Fuji & Jade has closed quite a bit.

Sakura is a little too far to walk to from downtown State College, but almost close enough to not want to bother driving. The main reason I go to this place is for their sweet potato roll. I have always been a sucker for a good sweet potato roll and Sakura does it well. I have always had good experiences with their sushi and their tempura, especially since they offer soy paper sushi (since I am allergic to nori/seaweed. The service is sub par and the place is always empty but occasionally when I have a hankering for sushi that doesn't come from Wegmans I make the short trip out there.

I am very skeptical of any restaurant that bills itself as simply "Asian" -- what in the world does that mean? A hodge-podge of various types of cuisines? I wanted to wait a few weeks before trying this new place to give them a chance to work out any initial kinks... My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday night around 7pm and it was pretty busy there as it appeared almost all the tables were full with families and an older crowd (read: non-undergraduates). We were greeted by a friendly host who seated us and laid their book -- I mean, menu -- in front of us. The menu was mostly Japanese entrees and sushi bar, with a 3/4 page of Thai dishes, and a sprinkling of Chinese dishes. They have a Bento lunch special for $8.95 and I was impressed by the various types of sushi rolls as well as the 9 vegetarian rolls. We ended up ordering miso soup, smoked salmon sashimi (I don't always see this on sushi bar menus), fried calamari, the lobster tempura roll, and the Eel Lovers roll (shrimp tempura, unagi, and avocado). The sushi rolls can be made with brown rice and/or tofu wrapper instead of dried seaweed. I don't think I would ever try those options but it's nice that they offered them! Food -- The food was good... almost "really good"... well, at least, as good as it gets in State College. I would have given them 5 stars except that the rice was a little dry and we had to wait a while to get our food. Also, the fried calamari was too small of an appetizer for it being $5.95. They used the big squid and I found it to be overcooked and chewy. It irked me that the rice was also too dry, and not the more softer, stickier consistency of Japanese-style rice. Otherwise, the miso soup was good, the sushi rolls were nicely presented and tasty (the lobster tempura had a giant tail sticking out of one end, which was very eye-catching), and best of all -- my smoked salmon sashimi came in a nice-sized portion and tasted fresh! Yay! As of today, they do not have a liquor license but our waitress told us you can bring your own. I'm not sure if there is a limit to what/how much you can bring, so you might want to check on that before you go if you like to have a drink with your dinner. Ambience, decor, & service -- I'd say better than Fuji Jade but not quite as good as Cozy Thai. Maybe about the same level as My Thai: it has a tasteful, modern, bistro feel to it; not gaudy. A nice place for an intimate dinner, lots of 4-top tables but I did notice that groups larger than 4 had to wait a while for the staff to figure out how to fit them in. The bathroom was surprisingly large but clean and unique (check out the cool wall tiles in the ladies room). Our water was refilled constantly and our waitress (and other staff who would stop by) were very friendly. Oh, a nice touch was to see chopsticks laid out on the place settings instead of forks. Yes, I know we're in Central Pennsylvania, but this is an Asian restaurant, right? I would definitely go back again and am hopeful that the food will stay consistently good and that they will figure out how to speed up the cooking just a little bit. The prices were reasonable for the quality and portion that you received (except maybe the fried calamari). Their hours are generally from 11-10pm. Welcome to State College, Sakura!

Hands down the best sushi in town. The staff is very polite, the atmosphere is very relaxing and nice, and the food is terrific. The special rolls are what its all about here. They are so delicious and flavorful, with combinations of ingredients that are inventive and certainly not found anywhere else. I haven't had anything from the kitchen yet but everything I've seen going to other tables looks really good as well. For sushi in State College there is no other place that compares. Remember to BYOB.
